The government is ready to launch an anti-cervical cancer campaign in which girls from 9 and fourteen years will receive the vaccine to prevent cervical cancer. The campaign will start in six states. According to officials, during the first stage of this vaccination program, 2.55 million girls will be targeted to receive the human HPV (HPV) vaccination.
The states that comprise these six include Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Mizoram, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra as well as Uttar Pradesh. India hosts approximately 16 percent of the total female population. In all around a quarter are affected by cervical cancer within India. To fight this disease, India only has one HPV vaccine -the American company Merck’s Gardasil. The vaccine is available on the market for private purchase in a single dose filled syringes and its cost is around Rs 10,850.
